The race kicked off with Ty Gibbs taking his pole position to lead the majority of stage 1. However, William Byron surged late in the stage to pass Gibbs and claim the Stage 1 victory. After running at the top of the leaderboard most of the day, Christopher Bell took the lead in Stage 2 and rode all the way to win Stage 2.

NASCAR threw the 7th caution of the day on lap 249 of the scheduled 400 laps due to lightning in the area. Shortly after the caution the fans were urged to leave the stands and big storms followed with rain, lightning and thunder continuing for a few hours. NASCAR ultimately decided that they were not making much progress on the track drying efforts and called the race, declaring Bell the winner, his second win of the season and a much needed win after a series off tough races for the 20 car.

Brad Keselowski was beginning to look strong and felt that he would have a great chance to take the win if it went the full distance. The number 6 car ultimately settled for 2nd.

Kyle Larson battled a long day of weather challenges on his attempt to complete both the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in the same day. A long delay at the start of the Indy 500 put him behind schedule but he ultimately showed up at Charlotte Motor Speedway just as the race was red-flagged and never got to get in the car.
